Climbing Plants Seek the Sun

Vines always look up!

You were told that a climbing plant that interests you likes full sun, but the best you can do is offer it shade? Don’t worry too much about that. Almost all climbers tolerate shade while in their juvenile phase; it’s when they reach adulthood that sun becomes necessary.

As long as the support you offer them to climb on (trellis, pergola, wall, tree, etc.) rises above the surrounding vegetation and other obstacles, your vine will climb it and eventually reach the sun it needs. You just have to be a bit patient!

Garden writer and blogger, author of 65 gardening books, lecturer and communicator, the Laidback Gardener, Larry Hodgson, passed away in October 2022. Known for his great generosity, his thoroughness and his sense of humor, he reached several generations of amateur and professional gardeners over his 40-year career. Thanks to his son, Mathieu Hodgson, and a team of contributors, laidbackgardener.blog will continue its mission of demystifying gardening and making it more accessible to all.
