Store Leaves for Next Year’s Compost

Don’t use all your fall leaves as mulch… and most certainly don’t put them out with the trash’! Put some aside, shredded if possible, in plastic bags (garbage bags are ideal). You’ll need them!

Next spring and summer, your compost will be filling up with green organic material (weeds, kitchen scraps, grass clippings, etc.). However, to properly break down, compost requires an approximately equal share of green and brown materials and brown materials are in short supply in summer. However, with a good supply of saved-up dead leaves, you’ll be able to “feed” your compost right through until next fall!
