Gardening Laidback Gardener Tip of the Day

For the Best Plants, Shop Thursday or Friday

When you shop just as plants are being put on display, you’ll have the best choice.

Nurseries and garden centers like to look their best on weekends and therefore generally have new plant shipments delivered on Thursdays and Fridays. So if you want to have the first pick of plants or grab yours while they’re fresh from the supplier, before they’ll have had time to suffer from any inattention, Thursdays and Fridays – or very early Saturday morning – are the best days to go plant shopping!

Larry Hodgson is one of Canada’s best-known garden communicators. He has written for many garden publications in both the United States and Canada, including Canadian Gardening, Harrowsmith, Horticulture, Fine Gardening and Organic Gardening. He also speaks frequently to horticultural groups throughout Canada and the U.S. His book credits include The Garden Lover’s Guide to Canada, Complete Guide to Houseplants, Making the Most of Shade, Perennials for Every Purpose, Annuals for Every Purpose, and Houseplants for Dummies, as well as nearly 60 other titles in English and French.
